Anderssen & Voll Elevate the Stacking Chair for &Tradition

While the everyday stacking chair wouldn’t win any awards for aesthetics, the Allwood chair designed by Torbjørn Anderssen and Espen Voll – of their eponymous studio Anderssen & Voll – for &Tradition could definitely take home the gold. Crafted entirely from wood, hence the name, this contemporary furnishing breaks down preconceived notions of what a stacking chair should look like. Often plastic, rigid, and with an emphasis on function over form, the duo offers a new, subversive design expression for a style of chair that is ubiquitous yet often disregarded.

Wood is truly sustainable. Imagine a material created by nature from soil, water, air, and sunlight? Quite magical! Wood has a great touch and brings warmth to any interior. As Scandinavians, it is hard for us to envision a home with no wood.

– Torbjørn Anderssen

Using advanced production techniques like lamination and CNC milling, the Allwood chair is a combination of laminated wood, plywood, and solid wood to keep the chair from weighing too much – one basic requirement for a stackable chair. The plywood seat and backrest are subtly contoured to provide comfort in lieu of any upholstery. The frame of the chair connects with the backrest from the rear, giving the seat its distinctive identity along with the side rails that connect its front and back legs.
