Established in 2011 by Kate Driver, Los Angeles-based multidisciplinary design studio West Haddon Hall debuts its first furniture collection consisting of 14 pieces that seamlessly blend style and bygone eras into timeless works of craftsmanship. Collection I borrows from the essence of a time between the art deco and mid-century periods to create a series that includes both hard and soft seating, tables, and casegoods that are truly timeless. Speaking on her ethos: “It is with a firm belief that good design ages well, these pieces were created to live in harmony with ever-evolving lifestyles and tastes.”
Careful distillation through West Haddon Hall’s lens results in Collection I feeling cohesive despite reference from multiple eras. Materials were meticulously selected – sometimes in a fun color or unexpected texture – in hopes of piquing interest while also calling attention to high-quality construction and longevity. These pieces were designed with Driver’s unique approach to craft modern-day heirlooms that will live on through generations.
The most magical spaces are those that feel alive, and our design practice is constantly asking, ‘How do we bring spirit to space? How can we add to and evolve that narrative over time?’ When designing this collection, I wanted to layer charm, warmth, and texture with versatility.
Eccentric yet approachable, Collection I’s forms are pared down, exuding a balance between history and a timeless, contemporary appeal. For instance, the Millwood Pedestal Table features a minimal oak surface and base atop curved legs that resemble turned wood spindles you might find on a classic balustrade. The Mulberry Sofa lends the classic camelback a touch of whimsy with the addition of a slightly flared arm. Meanwhile, the casual Ivy Side Table creates high contrast materiality through solid oak and a brilliant green resin.
West Haddon Hall has stayed true to its commitment of local craftsmanship and functional artistry throughout Collection I as all of its pieces were created in Los Angeles, California. The studio worked with skilled artists and artisans to realize each piece and will continue to do so when Collection II is released in Fall 2024.
