If you’re asking yourself if there is any benefit of braiding hair at night before bed, the answer is yes.

Probably you’ve already heard something about braiding your hair before sleeping, or you might have even tried that already, maybe resulting in a curly pattern in the morning.

That is the most visible instant effect of braiding your hair before bed, but if you’re looking for other benefits, this article is for you.

What Are the Benefits of Braiding Your Hair Before Sleeping?

Braiding your hair before bed helps to reduce frizz, and prevents tangling, the formation of split ends, breakage, and the thinning of the hair caused by friction.

My grandma, who had the most voluminous and beautiful hair in our family, always used to braid her hair before sleeping. She was also using a natural hair brush to detangle it. So these beauty tips go a long while back in time.

Before braiding your hair you’ll need to carefully detangle it. Make sure your hair is well-dried before combing it, as hair is more sensitive when it is wet. You can use a detangling mist if needed, or leave-in oils, suitable for your hair type, on the length of your hair (mostly at ends), too.

Plus, using silky bedding and wearing satin or silk sleepwear, would complete the anti-breakage defense, and you’ll sleep like a beautiful princess, or prince, while your happy hair would keep growing and glowing.

More than that, in the morning you’ll have a nice curly or wavy hairstyle. You can also play with the size of curls you want to have, by making smaller or larger braids.

How Should You Braid Your Hair?

braiding hair before sleeping

You don’t need to do super stylish braids if you just do them for the purpose of taking care of your hair, and you’ll unbraid them in the morning (except when sleeping in public… kidding.).

They don’t need to be too tense, and you don’t need to use any styling product, but you can use some live-in conditioner, oils, or anything that is suitable for your hair type and would help nourish, and hydrate your hair.

So, if you’re about to go to bed, follow these steps:

  1. Carefully brush your hair, starting with the ends and gradually moving higher. Use a detangling spray if necessary.
  2. Apply nourishing products, according to your hair type (oils, live-in conditioners, etc.)
  3. Depending on how many braids you want to have (I would suggest two), part your hair and then start braiding the three-stand braids. French or Dutch braids would be perfect, but if you can’t braid on your scalp, basic braids would also help.
  4. Use satin hair ties for securing the ends if you can. Cotton is also better than rubber bands or plastic ones.

Now that you know how and why to braid your hair before bed, let’s see why you should not do this.

If you don’t want your hair to be wavy or curly in the morning, braiding your hair at night is not for you. It won’t help if in the morning you’ll need to use a hair straightener because of that. However, if you’ll be washing your hair in the morning, that would be cool.

Also, braiding your hair excessively tight would rather damage than help.

FAQs

Would braiding hair at night before bed make my hair grow longer?

Yes, as it prevents your hair from breakage and split ends, it would help your hair grow longer and healthier.

Should I sleep with my hair braided every night?

Yes, if you want it to help your hair, you should make a habit of it, as braiding your hair before bed only once would not help.

In conclusion, braiding your hair at night before bed has multiple benefits, making it an amazing hack of hair care. Keep loving your hair!

Criss cross knotless braids might pop out into your eyes for their fascinating appearance.

These criss cross braids are a great way to simplify the braiding process, cut the costs, and make your hairstyle stand out.

So, before getting straight to your hairstylist to get this dope hairdo, take a look at these seven wonders of the world of hair, this time consisting of the best criss cross knotless braids tips, from my experience as a braider, wearer of braids, and hair lover.

Best Criss Cross Knotless Braids Tips from Hair Expert

tips for criss cross knotless braids

1. Use Products That Don’t Leave Build-Ups

If you want your hair to be clean and neat the next day, wash your hair the night before styling it, and use products that don’t leave build-ups.

Generally, no matter what type of hair you have, you need to use at least one product in order to get the best criss cross knotless braids.

That’s completely ok, but try and avoid water-resistant products that leave build-ups when installing and doing the maintenance (using edge controls, gels, and so on).

You’d need to hydrate and wash your hair, but just prevent making yourself clean the unnecessary.

2. Get A Perfect Geometry of Sections

The aspect of criss cross knotless braids is very much determined by the paths made on your scalp and how your hair is divided.

Make sure that the sections are well drawn, and the braids fall in the best place at the point where the crossover ones meet the knotless braids, so that there will be no empty spaces.

3. They Should Not Hurt

If you opt for a knotless style, you probably want your braids to be pain-free and harmless.

But these braids are mixed with cornrows, or rubber band “braids”, which can be over-tensed. Make sure they aren’t so, if you care about your hair and scalp.

Of course, you can also choose them because of their stylish design and flat look, but being extremely tense doesn’t help, and they would only damage and make you have a hard time wearing them instead of enjoying them.

4. Properly Use The Rubber Bands

Using rubber bands for the criss-cross part is something common these days but at the same time really special, while also being at hand for someone who has no braiding skills.

Plus, it is a versatile option, as you can use any color for rubber bands. Yes, they are very cool.

The thing is, there are some downs here as well, so be careful. Try to find some good quality rubber bands.

And for the sake of your hair, soak them in olive or baby oil for several minutes before using them.

Take extra care while washing your hair, you can loosen or wiggle them down and then replace them or even completely take them off and redo the criss-crossed part after.

Furthermore, consider that if you keep them on for too long, they can bind to your hair and make it very difficult to remove without breaking your hair.

You can use lemongrass essential oil (or another citrus essential oil) to break your rubber bands when you need to remove them.

You’ll only need a few drops to break one rubber band. You can use a Q-tip soaked in oil too.

5. Consider Rebraiding The Criss Cross Part

Cut your expectations down about how much you want your criss-cross knotless braids to last if they’re longer than 2-3 weeks. Moreover, if you use rubber bands instead of crossover cornrows, they’ll last even less.

However, you can rebraid only the criss cross part every two weeks, or as often as needed, so you can keep them for more (up to 6 weeks).

6. Protect Them from Friction

criss cross knotless braids tips
hairbysanaa/Instagram

If you want your hairstyle to last longer and look neat, try to protect them while sleeping, using silky sheets or a satin bonnet.

It is very easy and affordable to get a satin bonnet, and you can wear it when getting dressed as well.

Buying silky bedding or pillowcase is also a great investment, as it is good for preventing wrinkles as well, and protecting your hair from breakage. Don’t wear rough textures on your head during your hairstyle journey.

7. Play with Styling and Decorating them

Criss cross knotless braids are very easy to style. It’s certain that you won’t get bored of them very easily, as you can tie them up in a ponytail or bun, in two tails, or double buns, you can curl the ends (using warm water if they’re made together with synthetic hair as usual), decorate with different accessories (beads, cuffs, rings, decorative rubber bands, and any other jewels, just be creative), and many more.

In conclusion, criss cross knotless braids are a beautiful and stylish way to wear your hair and miss out on the bore. By following these tips, you can achieve the best possible results and enjoy your braids for longer than ordinarily.

FAQs

How long do Criss Cross knotless braids last?

They’ll last up to 3 weeks if mixed with cornrows and not rubber band braids, and up to 10 days if made with rubber band braids. However, if you rebraid the criss cross part, you can keep them for up to 6 weeks.

Are criss cross knotless braids suitable for all hair types?

Yes, criss cross knotless braids work for all hair types, if the hair is long enough to be braided. They would only need different products for creating and maintaining them properly.

How to maintain criss-cross knotless braids?

To take care of your criss-cross knotless braids, it is important to keep them clean and hydrated and avoid using any products that may cause an accumulation of build-ups.

Carefully wash them using products suitable for your hair type, and if done with rubber bands, consider taking them off and remaking the criss-crossed sector after washing your hair. You should also avoid friction, so you can wear a satin bonnet while sleeping and getting dressed.

Don’t forget to have a lot of fun and pictures while wearing these beautiful braids. Keep loving your hair!

I know that there are lots of people, whether they have an afro, straight, wavy, or curly hair, who would like their hair to be… braided. Unfortunately, braided hair doesn’t grow braided.

But isn’t it more beautiful that you can try so many braiding styles? When talking about box braids, I can imagine hundreds of different box braid styles and colors, and all of them can last for a pretty long time.

Let’s take a look at some of the most frequently asked questions about different box braids types and how long they last. I’m going to answer each of them.

What Is Box Braid?

Box braids are a type of protective hairstyle that is popular among people with Afro-textured hair but can be done on all types of hair.

The style involves dividing the hair into square or rectangular sections and then braiding the hair down from each section.

The braids can be done with just the person’s natural hair, but often, synthetic braiding hair is added in for length, thickness, and color.

You can read our article on “How To Do Box Braid?” to learn more about naturally creating your boxer braid.

Box braids can be worn in many different ways, including up in a bun, down and loose, in a ponytail, or even half up and half down.

They also come in many different sizes, from thin micro braids to thicker jumbo braids. The size and length of the braids can change the look dramatically.

Boxer braids can also help your natural hair grow longer and healthier by reducing the amount of manipulation and breakage your hair experiences.

How Long Can I Expect My Box Braids to Last?

How Long Can You Expect Your Box Braids to Last
Model – Inashan, Photographer – Jeissi Fanchin

In general, Box braids can last forever if you unbraid them after 6-8 weeks, and do them again.

Depending on the size, hair type, and maintenance, different box braids need to be unbraided after a different period of time. Here is a table on box braid’s lifespans.

Type of Box BraidsDuration (Approximate)Key Notes
Standard Box BraidsUp to 2 monthsDuration same as standard box braids, with the right maintenance
Knotless Box BraidsUp to 2 monthsDuration same as standard box braids, with right maintenance
Jumbo Box Braids4 to 6 weeksDue to thickness, less lasting
Medium Box BraidsUp to 6 to 8 weeksDuration can vary depending on braid thickness and path size
Box Braids on Caucasian HairUp to 8 monthsWith proper maintenance and small braids
Bohemian Box BraidsUp to 8 weeksRequires special maintenance
Box Braids on Straight HairUp to 2 monthsHair growth may appear faster
Box Braids for MenUp to 4 to 8 weeksLess maintenance generally means shorter duration
Crochet Box BraidsUp to 6 to 8 weeksDepends on hair type and maintenance
Longevity of Box Braids

The durability of box braids also depends on how well you care for them. You need to wash and dry them properly.

Sleeping on satin or silk sheets, not wearing wool caps, and avoiding high-tension styles can all extend the lifespan of your braids.

Also, it’s crucial to give your natural hair a break between installations to prevent damage and breakage.

You can expect your box braids to last for up to 2 months if they are thin and well done.

Also, don’t pull them too much with lots of tight stylings, remove the fallen hair (stuck into your braids) with a tweezer, and use products to calm down freezy hair.

And if your hair has grown and there’s nothing to do about it (instead of rebraiding the most visible braids), you can wear some accessories so you can mask it.

Don’t get used to this last advice, you still need to unbraid them after two months if you don’t want your natural hair to become dreadlocks.

How Long Do Knotless Box Braids Last?

How long do knotless box braids last
Knotless box braids (Photo from archive, ©Ina Shan ©HairdoHairstyle)

Knotless box braids can last the same as box braids(4 – 6 weeks). They’re a newer and more comfortable style since they don’t put as much tension on the scalp. if they’re thin and done right.

Some (on the internet) say they last two weeks less, but it doesn’t make sense to me.

The only reason behind this could be that, they knot it with high tension, That not only reduce the lifespan of the braid but also cause pain and hair breakage.

All these box braids would behave differently from one hair type to another, but you can get the best of them with some carrying.

How Long Do Jumbo(Large) Box Braids Last?

Jumbo or large box braids are much thicker and have larger parting sections, therefore, hair will get messy easier as well as it would be visible as paths are on display.

Washing them well would also be more difficult, as the hair strands are massive, and you don’t have much access to your scalp.

Also, when your hair grows, the roots would look worse. Because of all that, jumbo box braids would last less than small box braids, generally, four weeks or a maximum of six weeks, depending on hair type and maintenance.

How Long Do Medium Box Braids Last?

How Long Do Medium Box Braids Last
Medium Box Braids, (Photo from archive, ©Ina Shan ©HairdoHairstyle)

Medium box braids are a bit different from one hairstylist to another. They aren’t large nor micro, but if the sizes of the paths are not much larger than the small ones and the braids are thicker, then they can last up to 8 weeks too.

If the sections are bigger than 2 cm, mostly on the top and at the hairline, they might be more likely to last up to 6 weeks.

How Long Do Box Braids Last in Caucasian Hair?

Caucasian hair, whether it is straight, wavy, or curly, whether it is women’s or men’s hair, can last in box braids for up to 8 months if done right and small, as long as it is well maintained, cleaned, and looked after.

How Long Do Bohemian Box Braids Last?

Bohemian box braids, if done with good crochet braids hair and small braids, can last up to eight weeks, but the hair needs special maintenance.

It will change its aspect anyway, but it can still look fine if you take care of it (wrap it into a satin scarf while sleeping, gently untangle it, use oils, etc.).

How Long Do Box Braids Last on Straight Hair?

How long do box braids last on straight hair
Straight Hair Box Braids After 8 Weeks, Model – Inashan, Photographer – Jeissi Fanchin

As mentioned before, when not referring to a specific type of hair, box braids can last up to 2 months on average.

When box-braided, the difference between afro hairs and straight hairs would be that straight hair may seem to grow faster as the root grows pretty straight down.

Baby hair also looks longer, and depending on the haircut, the end of the natural hair can get out from braids.

You can manage these problems that can appear in time by using a dedicated crochet braids hook to put the hairs that got out and the baby hairs back in the braids. You can also cut the ends if you don’t mind.

Moreover, straight hair is silkier, so you better not use conditioner when washing your braids, as they can get loose. You can still moisturize your scalp with natural oils, and wash it with shampoo. Other maintenance processes are the same.

How Long Do Box Braids Last for Guys?

Guys don’t do the maintenance, so their box braids can last up to four weeks. If there are small box braids and well cared for, they can last up to 8 weeks for men as well.

How Long Do Crochet Box Braids Last?

crochet braids
Crochet braids, Model – Inashan, Photographer – Baciu Foto

On one hand, when talking about crochet braids, we talk about a cornrows pattern that would be totally hidden by the hair added. If done right, we will not see knots and empty spaces, and the new hair will look natural.

In this case, afro-haired people will take advantage of their properties to remain closer to the scalp in time, while straight-haired people would notice when the braids seem to be floating between the scalp and the synthetic hair if too much time has passed.

Assuming this, afro-haired people can maintain their crochet braids for up to 8 weeks, while straight-haired people can keep them for up to 6 weeks.

On the other hand, what is also very important besides the pattern, are the hair extensions used and the aftercare.

Washing your braided hair under all these extensions might be much more difficult, as the cornrows are unmovable and tied up on your scalp, and you don’t have much access.

Taking everything into account, it’s complicated to keep crochet braids for up to two months, so I would say that they last up to six weeks

These are only a few of the protective afro hairstyles, but if you want to try all of the possible braiding styles, you’ll need to live very long.

I hope that you can do that! Six new box braids per year isn’t a lot, but you might be braided for the whole year if you do that. Anyway, I’d suggest you take some breaks between.

How to Maximize the Life of Your Box Braids?

Maximizing the life of your box braids involves regular and careful maintenance. Start by ensuring that your hair stays hydrated. Despite being in braids, your hair still requires moisture. Spritz your hair with water using a spray bottle, then follow up with a light oil to seal the moisture in.

Keeping your scalp clean is equally crucial. The frequency of cleaning your scalp may vary depending on your hair type and the products you use.

However, you might need to do so as often as once a week. Consider using a mild shampoo or a specially formulated scalp cleanser.

Also, protecting your hair while you sleep can make a significant difference. Satin or silk pillowcases or a night-time head wrap can protect your hair from friction and dryness caused by cotton fabrics.

Avoid over-styling. While one of the benefits of box braids is their versatility, over-styling can cause tension on your roots and lead to breakage. Opt for looser styles and give your hair a break between them.

Finally, practice good daily maintenance. Regular light maintenance is better than trying to fix problems like dryness or build-up after they’ve occurred.

This could include gentle detangling and applying a hydrating leave-in conditioner or oil regularly.

Take care of your hair, and enjoy new box braids!

Those who have naturally straight hair often like to add a bit of a wave or perm to make their hair more detailed and beautiful. Hair perming is a chemical and heat treatment; it needs proper care and particular hairstyles to keep the hair evenly permed.

So, ”Can you braid permed hair?” might be the most asked question of those who want to perm their hair or have already done it recently. Keep reading to know the answer.

Can You Braid Permed Hair?

The short answer is yes you can braid your permed hair, but there is more to consider before you attempt this. A loose braid can actually help to make your curls hold shape longer. But tight braids are not recommended for permed hair as they can ruin your curls.

How Does Hair Perming Work?

hair perming

Generally, hair perming is of two types – single-action and dual-action. The single-action perming is for straighter European and Asian hair. On the other hand, dual-action perming is for African hair structures.

Though they are different, every type of hair perming goes through a general procedure, and here we will discuss how this process actually works.

  • At first, the hair needs to be softened to make it easy to add waves and curls. A perm lotion is applied to the hair strands that enter the cortex by swelling the cuticle layers.
  • The perm lotion breaks the disulfide bonds of the hair surface into sulfide bonds, making the hair ready to take a new shape.
  • After keeping the hair rolled by perm rods, perm lotion is removed, and a neutralizer is applied to the hair. This product works opposite of the perm lotion and regenerates the disulfide bonds to make the hair fixed into a new shape.

Braiding Permed Hair

braiding permed hair

Though hair perming is a chemical-induced hair treatment, the waves and curls you have after perming become like your natural hair wave patterns. A stable perm on your hair can bear all the natural hairstyles, yet you need to be cautious and discuss it with your hairstylist.

Braiding can create uneven waves on the permed hair if the treatment is done recently because perming makes your hair more delicate and prone to damage. But proper maintenance and regular conditioning can improve the stability of your permed hair.

Whether or not you can braid your permed hair basically depends on the type of braid you want to have. If you want regular braids (French, Dutch, or fishtail braids), you don’t need to think so much because these braids need average thick sections of hair without hurting the waves you got after perming.

But if you are into micro braids, then there is definitely something you should be concerned about. Because they need really tiny sections of hair, making the perms get negatively affected.

Final Words

Hair perming gives your hair a new shape, and it might be stressful for that hair to get braided. But after you have passed 2-3 weeks of perm treatment, you can try braiding into regular styles. So, can you braid permed hair? I hope you have got your query answered.

Take care of your permed hair, and impress people with those new waves and curls.

Criss-cross braids are a fun and special kind of hairstyle where the braids cross over each other. This creates an interesting pattern that looks really cool.

Whether you’re looking for a new braided hairstyle to try or you want a special updo for a party, criss-cross braids are a great choice.

With some practice, or help from a hair stylist, you can get a really amazing look that stands out!

Read this article, and get to know the variety of criss cross braiding styles, and secondly, but not secondary, find a step-by-step guide to do it yourself, different ways to style them, and also the most important things to consider.

What Are Criss Cross Braids?

criss cross braids style
Criss Cross Braids

Criss cross braids are basically two or more braids that cross over each other, creating an X shape. You can also call them X-braids or crossover braids.

It is mostly a decorative style and it can be worn in many different ways, from only two Dutch braids to a full-head crisscrossed cornrows pattern, or only several criss cross braids mixed with other cornrows, half criss cross half box braids, and so on.

So this crossover technique can be used in many ways, like Dutch braids or box braids, and they can be worn for casual events or for special occasions.

You can also make your criss-cross braids unique by adding hair accessories or changing the way you part your hair.

They can only cross over each other once, or make lots of back and forth travels, creating a kind of DNA shape.

How to Make Criss Cross Braids

If you know how to do cornrows, X-braids would be very easy for you, as well. Remember, criss cross is mostly only about parting the hair. So, get the party started!

Steps to Create Criss Cross Braids:

  1. Brush your hair. Take your time to do it well, so you don’t encounter any tangled hair or knots while braiding. Use a detangling spray or leave-in conditioner if necessary.
  2. Get your tail comb and divide the hair that you want to braid and tie away the remaining hair (in case you don’t use all of your hair for two crossover braids). The initial sections for two criss cross braids would be as for two equal parallel braids.
  3. At the point that you want your braids to criss cross themselves, make a transverse line and secure the top of one section and the bottom of the opposite one. If you want them to criss cross in multiple places, you need to split the sections again, but make sure you always secure the paths, alternating left and right.
  4. It is time for you to start the braiding process. So, you’ll braid the unsecured section, from the top till the end, alternating left and right paths according to how many times you want them to cross over each other.
  5. When you finish the first braid, release the other sections and start braiding the second one. You’ll need to cross over the first braid to continue braiding the second one. Do it like there is nothing bothering you.

How to Create Criss Cross Rubber Band Braids

If you don’t know how to braid, or you just want to try this type of criss cross no-braid braiding, then you’ll need some rubber bands!

  • Start by dipping your rubber bands in olive or baby oil. Let them sit there for about 10 minutes.
  • Brush your hair and divide the sections you want to style into squared sections.
  • Use your favorite styling cream to define your paths and keep your hair in place.
  • Tie your first square section with one rubber band and continue by tying it together with the second of the next row, then tie it together with the third square of the first row and back to the fourth of the second row.
  • Tie the first one of the second row with the second of the first row and all remaining ones.
  • When you need to remove your rubber bands, you can use some lemon or citrus essential oil.

Best Criss Cross Braid Hairstyles For Women

1. Criss-Cross Box Braids with Rubber Band

Divide your hair into squares or rectangles, securing each section with a rubber band at the roots.

Start braiding each section, ensuring that some sections are directed diagonally to form a criss-cross pattern.

The rubber bands help in achieving a neater look and provide extra grip to the braids.

2. Criss-Cross Knotless Braids

Knotless braids give a more natural and less bulky look at the roots as compared to traditional box braids.

To achieve the criss-cross knotless braids, alternate the direction in which you braid each section, so some braids cross over the others.

3. Criss-Cross Braids in the Front

kensi_hair/Instagram

This style involves creating braids that criss-cross at the front of your head. You can start with two braids at the front and cross them over, braiding along the side of your head and to the back. This creates a beautiful and unique headband effect.

4. Criss-Cross Straight Back Braids

Part your hair from the middle of your head or the side and braid straight back. After braiding a few rows, start crossing sections over from one braid to another to create a criss-cross pattern.

5. Criss-Cross Cornrows

iamcreation_of_beautyyy/Instagram

For those with Afro-textured hair, cornrows can be styled into a criss-cross pattern. Start by braiding the cornrows in an alternating, zigzag pattern. This will give your cornrows a unique criss-cross appearance.

6. Criss Cross French Braid

criss cross French braid
clairabelle_hairabelle/Instagram

Select a small section of hair at the front on one side of your part. Split this section into three smaller sections. Start a French braid by crossing the right strand over the middle, and then the left strand over the new middle.

Continue this pattern, but each time before you cross a section over the middle, add a bit of free-hanging hair to the section. Once you have started your braid and are near your ear, start taking small sections of hair from the other side of your part.

Once you reach the back of your head, you can continue braiding the length of your hair in a regular braid, or you can secure it in place and leave the rest of your hair free. Repeat the entire process on the other side.

7. Criss-Cross Dutch Braids

criss cross Dutch braid
clairabelle_hairabelle/Instagram

Start by parting your hair down the middle. Choose one side to start with and begin braiding from the front of your head.

As you braid, cross over strands from both sides of the part. This criss-cross technique will continue as you move toward the back of your head. Once you’ve completed one side, repeat this same process on the other side.

8. Criss-Cross Braids with Bun

criss cross braided bun
tginatural/Instagram

Begin by creating two or more French braids or Dutch braids from your forehead moving toward the back of your head, crossing strands over to create the criss-cross pattern.

Once you reach the crown of your head, combine the remaining lengths of the braids and twist them into a bun. You can choose to do a high bun or a low bun based on your preference.

9. Criss-Cross Braids without Rubber Band

criss cross braids without rubber band
tginatural/Instagram

This style can be achieved with a variety of braid types (like box braids, cornrows, or french braids), but the key is to create the criss-cross pattern without the use of rubber bands.

Part your hair into sections. Starting from one end, begin your braid, taking strands from both sides and crossing them over as you braid towards the other side.

The challenge in this style is to keep the sections neat and the tension even without the assistance of rubber bands. It may take a bit of practice but the result can be very stunning.

10. Criss-Cross Crown Braid

criss cross crown braid
clairabelle_hairabelle/Instagram

Begin a Dutch braid at one side of your head. As you braid, add strands from both sides of the part, crossing them over to create a criss-cross pattern. This will create a crown-like braid encircling your head.

11. Criss-Cross Half-Up Braid

criss cross half up braid
braidsambassador/Instagram

First, separate the top half of your hair. On one side, start a French braid, pulling strands from both sides as you braid towards the back of your head.

When you reach the middle of your head, secure this braid and repeat the same steps on the other side.

12. Criss-Cross Braided Updo

Begin by creating two French braids on each side of your head. Braid each section towards the back of your head.

Once you’ve completed both braids, intertwine them at the back of your head to form a criss-cross pattern. With the remaining lengths, twist them into a bun to finish the updo.

13. Criss-Cross Side Braid

side criss cross braid
braidsambassador/Instagram

Part your hair on one side, and choose the larger section to start with. Begin French braiding from the top, and as you braid, pull strands from the other side, crossing them over to create a beautiful side braid.

14. Criss-Cross Braided Ponytail

Start with two sections of hair at the front of your head. Braid each into a french braid, ensuring you cross strands over from the other side. Once both braids are complete, gather all your hair together and secure it into a high ponytail.

15. Double Criss-Cross Braids

double criss cross braids
kensi_hair/Instagram

Part your hair in the middle and start a Dutch braid on each side. As you braid, cross over strands from one braid to the other, creating an intricate criss-cross pattern.

16. Criss-Cross Fishtail Braid

Start by creating a traditional fishtail braid. As you braid, every few layers, pull a strand from the opposite side and cross it over, creating a criss-cross pattern within the fishtail braid.

17. Criss-Cross Box Braids

Begin by sectioning your hair into several boxes. Instead of braiding straight down, braid diagonally, pulling strands from neighboring boxes and crossing them over. This will give your box braids a unique criss-cross pattern. You can also check these knotless box braid styles for more ideas.

Things to Consider About Criss Cross Braids

You Can Alternate Crossing Over and Under the First Braid

Generally, when doing criss cross braids, you’ll braid the first cornrow, and the second one will always cross over the first braid. That is just how it naturally seems to work, but it doesn’t mean it has to be like that. If you want to cross the second braid under the first one, you can do it!

For this, you only need a crochet hook, like the one that is used for crochet braids, to bring the braid you work on, under the braided one. Just make sure to secure it by braiding it a little bit more so it will not come undone.

The effect of this method will be like both braids cross over each other.

Braiding Techniques Compatible with Criss Cross Braids

Criss cross braids are a technique suitable for different braiding styles. The most common are cornrows, but as you already know, it can also be done with only the use of rubber bands (and a bit of shining gel), and it can also work with several twisting methods.

Don’t forget to soak the rubber bands in a suitable oil (olive or baby) if you use them, so they will not damage your hair. Also, remove or replace the rubber bands before getting stuck.

Rebraid the Criss Cross Part if Mixed with Box Braids

If you only have criss cross braids from ear to ear, and the rest of your hair is box braided, rebraid the criss cross sector from time to time, especially if you’re using rubber bands.

Take Care of Them

Keep your braids away from friction by using a satin durag or bonnet when sleeping and dressing up. This will help keep your hair in place.

Clean, moisturize and hydrate your hair, as much as you need. You can also use moose and edge control products to keep your hair staying flat and looking nice.

How to Style Criss Cross Braids?

How to Style Criss Cross Braids

Depending on which type of criss cross braids you choose, there are lots of ways that you can style or decorate your braids.

Try incorporating colorful hair extensions or hair accessories (beads, rings, cuff clips, colorful rubber bands, etc) into the braid. This will add a pop of color and make your hairstyle stand out. If you opt for criss cross rubber band braids, you can also use colorful rubber bands.

You can also style the rest of your hair (depending on your pattern choice) in buns, ponytails, or other different ways.

FAQs

Usually, criss cross braids can last between several days and up to three weeks, if they are well-maintained.

However, this jumbo long braid style needs proper care else it won’t last long.

Partially Up Partially Down

half up half down long box braids

Styles like this are often used to create hairdos that can’t be achieved with curly hair, which black and mixed girls have naturally.

You can see this aims to recreate the classic half up and half down style where the sides are pulled back and secured. The back sections then fall freely.

Black and Blue Alternative Style

long black and blue braids

White women can totally rock long box braids too! They’re looser toward the roots, but the rest of the style is the same. Here these long sections start black and transition into two shades of blue, creating a super edgy look.

Box Braided Updo

high bun with long box braids

Light brown looks wonderful with skin tones that are similar, and high buns help draw the hair back and brighten up the face. The ends of these box braids are very thin, and the thinner parts wrap around the base of the bun to create a varied style.

Reddish Brown Curly Ends

long box braids with curly ends

Curly ends make this style look more unique than some of the ones above. There are also yellow bands in one of the strands that make it more decorative. The hair is pulled over one shoulder, and the ends are dyed a nice reddish-brown tone.

Blonde Braids

long blonde box braids

Blonde and black look beautiful together, as you can see in this look. The long, thin, blonde strands of hair capture your attention, and the roots remain dark and natural. The sides are pulled back , but some hair still hangs by the face to frame it.

Jumbo Box Braids

long jumbo box braids

If you like your hairstyle a little thicker, then this one will look wonderful. There are fewer braided pieces of hair, but the thickness makes up for it.

The jumbo braids hairstyle overall is very simple and the hair falls straight down. Some tiny strands of brown are woven into some sections, adding some depth.

Thick Brown Strands with Blonde

long brown box braids

These aren’t quite jumbo in size, but they’re thicker than you’ll see in some styles. The hair is brown with a nice red undertone, and some golden blonde pieces of hair are woven in, too. It’s a very nice look if you want something vibrant.

Blue Ombre Thin Style

long blue ombre box braids

We saw a variation of this earlier, but this is more classic long box braids look. They start tight at the roots of the hair, as this is appropriate for the hairstyle. They start black and transition to dark blue then icy blue in an ombre fashion.

Knotless Light Brown Strands

long knotless box braids

Many braided hairstyles for black women like this start with knots at the roots, but as you can see here there are none. This creates a sleeker and more mature look. The brown hair is very light and has some blonde highlights in it, creating a very varied style.

Loose Blonde Ends

long small box braids

Here’s a style that’s a little looser on the scalp. Tufts of dark, natural hair cover the head, and the plaits attach to it. The styled pieces of hair are blonde and very thin, and the ends are left looser than the rest of the style.

Beaded Long Brown Braids

You can decorate your hair with beads to create a more unique style that shows off your personality and tastes. These beads are gold and have a nice design in them, and the strands are also decorated with little sections of blonde locks to add further variety.

Red and Yellow Combo

long red and yellow box braids

If you want to mix up your look, then red and yellow long box braids are a great way to do so. These strands are pretty thick, and many are decorated with light-colored bands.

It’s a simple look with a center parting and straight styling. The color and bands are what make this truly stand out from the crowd.

White Braids with Side Part

long white box braids

Side partings are so pretty and draw attention to one side of the hair. White also helps mesmerize onlookers. You’ll look very bright and happy with these delightful tresses that fall halfway down your back and dazzle everyone who walks by.

Beaded Red Ponytail

You can show off your style with both the red color and beads in this hairdo. The box braids are all pulled back so they stay out of your face, making the hair easy to control.

The red gives you a vibrant look and the beads are very elegant and fun to spice up your style.

Red and Yellow with Bandana

long half and half box braids

Two-tone hairstyles look great with long box braids. One side here is red, and the other is a nice golden shade. A bandana sits on top of the hair in a vibrant red shade, and it compliments the two tones in the long sections very well.

Brown and Blonde Alternating Look

long blonde and brown box braids

These thick pieces of hair alternate colors between light brown and ashy blonde. The blonde is so light that it’s almost platinum. It creates a very eye-catching look. It’s a fun way to show off your personality and create a dynamic and varying hairstyle with long box braids.

Rusty Red Box Braids

long red box braids

Rusty red tones look more natural than vibrant ones, so you’ll have a nice, muted look while still having a unique shade in your hair.

A side parting with a very thin split on top makes each side look very volumized, as you can see here. Each strand ends thin, but the start is very thick.

Ash Ombre

long ash ombre box braids

Many looks like this have super tight and sleek pieces of hair, but here’s something a little looser and more natural. There are nice flyaway hairs that form curls on top of the head. The knotless braids style goes from black to an ashy grey color that in some light looks almost blue.

Yellow Ombre

long yellow ombre box braids

Lots of thin braids make this hairstyle look wonderful. It gives the impression of very thick hair, and the locks are nice and long.  It’s a very classic ombre style and looks lovely matched with bright clothes.

Half Up Purple and Brown

half up hairstyle with long box braids

Long box braids are pulled back to create a half-up style with these black, purple, and very light brown pieces of hair. This creates a very pretty and simple look that keeps some of your hair pulled back and out of your face.

The pieces get thinner as they go toward the lower back, creating a nice tapered effect.

There are lots of benefits to having this long box braided hairstyle, and you’ll certainly enjoy finding new ones to show it off. Make sure to care for it well, and maintain your chosen color and style whenever you need to.

You’ll certainly enjoy finding new ways to show off your chosen look to all of your friends, family, and admirers.
